campaign advertising during the January 30, 2001 The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer would like to remind all media of the legislative provisions surrounding campaign advertising during the January 30, 2001 by elections in the electoral districts of St. Barbe and The Straits & White Bay North. Section 226.1 of the Elections Act, 1991 provides that campaign advertising through broadcast and print is limited to a prescribed 21 day period between the issue of the writ and the day preceding the day before polling day. For the purpose of the by elections to be held Tuesday, January 30, 2001, the permissible 21 day period runs from January 8, 2001 to January 28, 2001, both days inclusive. This restriction applies to a registered party or candidate or anyone acting on their behalf. These restrictions do not apply to: advertising through the use of outdoor advertising facilities such as billboards, lawn signs or posters, etc.; advertising of public meetings for nomination and other electoral purposes such as campaign rallies and candidate debates or; announcements advising of the location of political parties� headquarters anytime throughout the campaign period.
