Minister applauds volunteers

Education Minister Judy Foote recognizes International Volunteer Day on December 5 by noting the many contributions of volunteers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to the province's education system.

"Through their efforts, we achieve goals that would otherwise be impossible," said Minister Foote. "We rely on volunteers for help and support in all levels of the school system.

"Volunteers are critical to students' success in school," noted the minister. "Our school board trustees and school council members invest an enormous amount of time and effort into making sure our students receive the best education possible. Our schools also depend on volunteers for pre-school literacy programs, extra-curricular activities, and adult learning. While many volunteers take on specific roles, many others are to be applauded as well for their willingness to give whenever and wherever they can.

"On International Volunteer Day, I thank all volunteers for their generosity and achievements," said Minister Foote.

In 1997, the United Nations declared 2001 as the International Year of the Volunteer and designated December 5 as International Volunteer Day.
