Minister celebrates Canadian Children's Book Week

Education Minister Judy Foote today encourages everyone in the province to celebrate Canadian Children's Book Week by picking up a book and reading.

Sponsored by Canadian Children's Book Centre, Canadian Children's Book Week, November 3 - 10, encourages the reading and writing of children's books. It also promotes Canadian children's authors and their publications.

"We strongly encourage children of all ages to pick up a book and enjoy the pleasures of reading, not just this week, but every week," said Minister Foote. "Research has clearly demonstrated that parents have a strong influence on children's literacy. It is important to provide all young children with enriching experiences, which instill a love of reading and set the stage for lifelong learning and success."

On Wednesday, November 7, Minister Foote joins other invited guests at the launch of Susan Chalker Browne's new book entitled Marconi's Secret. The Department of Education is purchasing 250 copies of this book to be placed in primary school libraries throughout the province.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of Canadian Children's Book Week. During the week, Canadian authors will tour the country, promoting both their own works and Canadian literature as a whole. As part of this national event, authors Margriet Ruurs and Katherine Holubitsky will be in Newfoundland, where each award-winning author will perform both school and public readings.
