Minister announces literacy funding

Education Minister Judy Foote announced today the approval of almost $159,000 for literacy projects/programs out of the Literacy Development Council's grant allocation.

Fifteen proposals from community-based organizations were approved, with awards ranging from $2,640 to $30,000. The list of approved projects follows.

These proposals were recommended by the Strategic Literacy Funding Committee, chaired by the Department of Education, which reviews grant proposals based on the directions outlined in the Strategic Literacy Plan. This committee replaces the grants review committees of both the National Literacy Secretariat (NLS) and the Literacy Development Council (LDC) in order to better coordinate federal and provincial literacy funding consistent with the Strategic Literacy Plan.

"I am pleased to see such a range of initiatives being supported from early literacy through to adult literacy, in keeping with the scope of the Strategic Literacy Plan," said Minister Foote. "Combined with the almost $117,000 approved following the October 18, 2000 deadline, this is a substantial provincial contribution to a variety of literacy initiatives."

"The Literacy Development Council is pleased to be working with government and literacy stakeholders to fulfill the goals of the plan," said Bessie Merrigan, chair of the Literacy Development Council. "We all have a role to play in raising the literacy levels of our province and I wish the15 organizations every success with their projects."

Over 50 submissions were received by the Strategic Literacy Funding Committee for consideration under the February 14, 2001 deadline. Proposals have also been forwarded by the committee to the National Literacy Secretariat for consideration. Proposals which are successful in securing NLS funding will be announced by the Minister of Human Resources Development Canada or her designate once approved. The next deadline for grant submissions is October 15, 2001.
