Minister announces Lester B. Pearson Scholarship winners

Education minister Judy Foote announced today the winners of the 2001 Lester B. Pearson Scholarship, which helps students with the costs associated with attending United World Colleges.

Amy Pieroway, of Pasadena Academy, Pasadena, will receive a scholarship to attend Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in British Columbia. Logan Wood, of Elwood Regional High, Deer Lake, will receive a scholarship to attend the Mahindra United World College in Pune, India.

"I am very pleased that we have been able to contribute $25,000 annually toward these scholarships," said Minister Foote. "This helps cover tuition, books and accommodations for a two-year study program at the United Colleges, which are dedicated to the promotion of international understanding by creating an environment in which students from many countries and cultures are brought together to study and serve the community. I am sure the 2001 Pearson Scholarship recipients are looking forward to the exciting years ahead and I wish them every success in their studies."

The Department of Education contributes $25,000 annually towards the scholarship and usually one student from this province is able to attend. This year, an additional place was made available to a Newfoundland and Labrador student with no additional cost to the province.

Lester B. Pearson and the Mahindra United World College are two of eight United World Colleges located throughout the world. Students graduate with an International Baccalaureate which is equivalent to Grade 12 and the university freshman year throughout North America.

This year's winners are among 100 students selected from more than 86 countries around the world. Ms. Pieroway and Ms. Wood were selected on the basis of academic achievement and qualities of character made evident in a detailed application and personal interview. The total value of each scholarship is in excess of $50,000, with contributions coming from government, corporations and private citizens.

A selection committee comprising representatives from the Department of Education, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association, school districts and private industry screened applications, carried out interviews and selected the winners.

The minister noted that the 1999 winner of the Pearson Scholarship, Kaila Mintz of Herdman Collegiate, Corner Brook, graduates this spring with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Franoise Guign of Prince of Wales Collegiate, St. John's, the 2000 winner, will be returning to Pearson in September for her second and final year.
