Final phase of renovations to Fatima Academy going ahead
Education Minister Judy Foote announced funding today for the final phase of a $1 million upgrade and modernization of Fatima Academy in St. Bride's.
Phase I included the construction of a corridor linking the primary/elementary and junior/senior high buildings, a new library, renovations to washrooms and the wiring of the entire school for computers. $375,000 was invested in 1999/2000 for this work.
"I am very pleased that we are able to provide funding of up to $625,000 to upgrade and modernize Fatima Academy," said Minister Foote. "This brings the total investment to $1 million for Phases I and II of this project."
Work will begin immediately to finalize detailed plans and specifications with a view to starting construction over the summer.
"I know that the students and staff of Fatima Academy have been looking forward to the completion of this work. The $1 million investment for these improvements is indicative of government's commitment to providing quality education in the appropriate environment.
"Since reorganization, we have committed $160 million for school construction and renovation projects including $23 million announced for 2001-2002 in the recent budget. To date eight new state-of-the-art schools have been constructed, planning/construction is under way for 10 more and major renovations or extensions have been completed on 27 schools throughout the province."
