New school for Lawn

Judy Foote, Education Minister and MHA - Grand Bank, announced today plans for the construction of a new K-12 school in Lawn.

"When government made the single largest investment of $125 million in school construction a few years ago, we established a template for the construction of all new schools that they be designed to enable teachers and students to access new technology and utilize modern teaching and learning techniques that have not been possible in older facilities," said Minister Foote.

All new schools are fitted with heating and ventilation systems to ensure good air quality. All classrooms are wired for computers and local area networks for the transfer of information from one computer to another within the building. Design also includes wheelchair accessibility, specialized areas to facilitate appropriate care for students with physical disabilities, gymnasiums, library-resource centres and technology labs.

"The new state-of-the-art school in Lawn will be such a facility," added the minister.

"With the $23 million announced in this year's budget and the $12 million announced last year, this government has committed a total of $160 million for school construction and renovation projects since 1998. To date eight new state-of-the-art schools have been constructed, planning/construction is under way for 10 more and major renovations or extensions have been completed on 27 schools throughout the province," said the minister.
