New money for provincial literacy initiatives

An additional $500,000 has been allocated to further provincial literacy initiatives.

"This brings additional federal and provincial investments in the initiatives that support the provinces Strategic Literacy Plan to $3 million over the past two years. We know that our provinces future prosperity is linked to the literacy levels of our population. Literacy skills are important to employment, health, citizenship and family life. This government is committed to working to ensure that supports are in place to see that every Newfoundlander and Labradorian has the opportunity to improve his or her literacy skills," said Education Minister Judy Foote.

Last year saw the establishment of the $2 million Literacy Endowment Fund, with matching funding of $1 million each from the provincial and federal governments. Interest earned on the fund will be used for literacy initiatives based on the Strategic Literacy Plan.

"Addressing literacy issues is also an important component of this governments Jobs and Growth agenda. The literacy levels of our people play a major role in their employability and career and business opportunities all important factors in our economic development," added the minister.
