NLIS 9 March 22, 2001 (Education) Education - An investment in our provinces future The realignment of the Department of Education and the addition of early childhood education to the departments existing K-12 education system and literacy mandate are indicative of this governments renewed commitment to investing today for a brighter tomorrow. Between 1997-1998 and 2001-2002, the number of students in the K-12 system will have declined by over 14,500 14.8 per cent. During that same period, the expenditure per student (excluding capital) will have grown from $5,557 to $6,434 an increase of 15.8 per cent. In recent years, this provinces investment in education has increased at a higher rate than any other province. Government reinvestment of savings from efficiencies gained as a result of educational reorganization has been significant. $160 million has been committed for school construction and renovations the largest investment in education since Confederation. Approximately $82 million has been reinvested to retain teaching units in the system since 1997-1998, despite an enrolment decline of 14,500 students during that period. School boards have retained all savings from school closures resulting in $23.4 million being reinvested for capital expenditures as a result. "Perhaps the most compelling message that came out of governments public consultations for the Jobs and Growth Strategy last year is that education is a cornerstone of our provinces economic development. Our unwavering commitment to continued investment in our education system and recent changes that saw responsibility for education spread over two departments, allowing for a more intensive focus in K-12 and post-secondary, are a clear indication that we have taken this message seriously," said Education Minister Judy Foote.
