New money for trails welcomed in Labrador

Lawrence OBrien, MP for Labrador, and Ernest McLean, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal welcomed todays announcement of a commitment of funds for continued snowmobile trail development. "The tourism appeal of these trails is already attracting visitors from the rest of the country," said Mr. OBrien. "We have an incomparable winter product here, and I am very pleased that we are developing that product to a world-class standard."

The Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) reports snowmobiling-related dollars spent by Canadians is in excess of $2 billion annually. "This enhanced infrastructure will better position us to attract more of those dollars to Labrador from national and international markets," said Minister McLean.

The announcement of the commitment of up to $2 million for the trails is part of the renewed federal-provincial funding for the Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement announced by Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry, and Premier Beaton Tulk today in St. Johns. In addition to the four existing programs funded through the agreement, a new tourism development and cultural and heritage industries initiative has been added, with funds totalling $11 million over two years.

The new program will enhance the province's tourism marketing efforts, invest in the cultural and heritage industries, and improve tourism infrastructure. The funds for trail development will complement the existing master plan for trails on the island, and augment new and existing trail developments in Labrador. The final selection of new trail projects will be determined through a process of reviews, assessments, and environmental screenings.

The Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement is managed jointly between the two governments, with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) taking the lead for the federal government and provincially through the Departments of Industry, Trade & Technology and Development and Rural Renewal.
