Davis Inlet airstrip temporarily closed

The Department of Works, Services and Transportation has temporarily closed the Davis Inlet airstrip because of a break down in snow clearing equipment. Because of engine failure in the equipment, the department is unable to clear snow from the runway, making it dangerous for planes to land.

"We understand this is very disappointing for the people in Davis Inlet who are getting ready for Christmas, but safety is our number one priority right now," said Rick Woodford, Works, Services and Transportation Minister. "We do not want to have planes trying to land when the airstrip has not been sufficiently cleared. This is a certified airport under Transport Canada and safety guidelines have to be met."

Efforts are now being made to ship alternate pieces of equipment to the town until the existing equipment is repaired. The department is working closely with the Canadian Coast Guard to mobilize a vessel to bring the replacement equipment into Davis Inlet. A Coast Guard ship with equipment on board will leave Corner Brook tomorrow morning. It is estimated it will take the vessel approximately two to three days to reach Davis Inlet, depending upon weather.

In the event of a medical emergency, the airport will be open for helicopter use. If weather does not permit a helicopter to land, the department will make use of a ski-equipped turbo plane. The Canadian Coast Guards Search and Rescue operations are also available, if needed. As of yet, the department is not aware that any such emergencies have occurred.

The department has issued a notice to pilots and has been in contact with Mushuau Innu Band Council Chief Simeon Tshakapesh and informed him of the decision. It is the departments understanding from Mr. Tshakapesh that the band council has equipment in Sango and will be sending people there this morning to clear that airstrip as an alternative.

"We certainly regret any inconveniences placed upon the people of Davis Inlet, but I am asking for their patience while we resolve the situation and ensure the airstrip is safe for planes to land," said Minister Woodford.
