Upgrades for Bell Island wharf

Rick Woodford, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and Jim Walsh, MHA - Conception Bay East and Bell Island, today announced that the Bell Island wharf will receive over $2 million in upgrades.

Government recently awarded a contract valued at $2,371,806 to Mariner Engineering and Construction Ltd. of St. Johns to make improvements to the former federal wharf at Bell Island. The improvements are designed to facilitate docking by allowing provincial ferry vessels a straight entry into the wharf. The contract includes the removal of a section on the western end of the wharf, the addition of two structures alongside the wharf (dolphins) and other improvements which will facilitate docking.

"These upgrades will make the wharf more compatible with the ferries operating on the service, particularly the Flanders and Beaumont Hamel, and will therefore improve the ability of these vessels to dock," said Minister Woodford.

"The contractor plans to start working on the wharf immediately," said Mr. Walsh. "By June 30, 2001, we expect the upgrades will be completed."
