Province seeks local input into federal transportation review

On November 17, 2000, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will make a submission to the Canada Transportation Act Review Panel (CTARP).

The Canada Transportation Act focusses on fostering a "safe, economic, efficient and adequate" transportation system for Canadian shippers and travellers. The review will consider whether the act and associated legislation meet these objectives.

The Department of Works, Services and Transportation is preparing governments submission and invites all interested individuals and organizations to submit comments or proposals to be included with the provinces report. Some issues the province plans to address are safety, accessibility, intelligent transportation systems, as well as air, marine and highway policies.

"This is the provinces opportunity to provide input into and possibly make changes to the federal transportation policy," said Rick Woodford, Works, Services and Transportation Minister. "I hope stakeholders will seize the opportunity to raise provincial transportation issues with this national panel."

Anyone interested in making a submission to the department is asked to contact Doug Shea, Department of Works, Services and Transportation by November 10 (telephone (709) 729-3637, fax (709) 729-0283, e-mail shead@mail.gov.nf.ca). After the panel has reviewed the provinces submission, a copy will be available on the CTA Review web site at //www.reviewcta-examenltc.gc.ca

The panel, appointed by federal Transport Minister David Collenette, began a comprehensive review of the Canada Transportation Act on July 1 of this year and will submit a final report to the minister by July 1, 2001. As part of the review process, CTARP is holding consultations in all provinces and territories. The panel is expected to be in St. Johns in January 2001 and will hear verbal presentations at that time.
