New ferry service for St. Barbe - Blanc Sablon

Starting May 1, 2000, individuals and business operators travelling between St. Barbe and Blanc Sablon will receive a new ferry service which will enhance marine transportation for the area.

Rick Woodford, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation; Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and MHA - St. Barbe; Ernie McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador; and Yvonne Jones, MHA - Cartwright-LAnse Au Clair, today announced that Labrador Marine Incorporated was awarded a four year, $17.8 million contract for the MV Apollo.

The Apollo is a 108 metre long vessel that can accommodate 1,200 passengers. The vessel has six decks and can carry over 100 cars and eight tractor trailers. Passenger service areas, including lounges, washrooms, the cafeteria and galley, have undergone extensive refurbishing in the past three years. The Apollo also has a childrens play area and is wheelchair accessible.

"This is a fantastic vessel. It is in wonderful shape, both inside and out," said Mr. Woodford. "I have no doubt that people and businesses using this ferry will be very pleased with the enhanced service."

Works, Services and Transportation officials inspected the vessel prior to awarding of the contract. The Apollo, which is currently in Mariehamn, Finland, is scheduled to arrive in Newfoundland in mid-February.

Mr. Furey said: "I am delighted about the awarding of the contract to the Apollo for the ferry service between St. Barbe and Blanc Sablon. It will provide the much needed increase in capacity for the service and an enhanced experience for travellers, especially tourists. I would, however, like to thank Northern Cruiser Ltd. for their previous service to the Straits."

"This demonstrates governments commitment to improving Labradors transportation network, for both people and industry," said Mr. McLean. "The need to expand ferry services in the Labrador Straits is a reflection on the tremendous growth in Labradors economy."

"This is a vital transportation link for the people of Southern Labrador and complements the development of the Trans Labrador Highway system," said Ms. Jones. "The vessel will boost tourism activities in this region by allowing more capacity for tourists and a first class cruising experience across the Strait of Belle Isle. This is the economic boost the district needs to move into the next decade."

Labrador Marine Inc. is a subsidiary of the Woodward Group of Companies. The Newfoundland owned Woodward Group has operated the Labrador Coastal Service since 1998 through another subsidiary, 10663 Newfoundland Limited.
