The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:
Co-ed senior volleyball
The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association held a co-ed volleyball tournament on December 8 and 9. There were five teams which participated in the tournament, two teams for Newtel Communications, two teams from Xwave, and a team of mixed players from the St. John�s men's and women's league. The tournament was a full round robin with the top three teams advancing to the playoffs. The first place team received a bye to the finals. The top three teams who advanced were Sidewinders 1 coming in third; Freaks and Geeks placed second, and the Y-not's? (Newtel) came in first. Sidewinders 1 and Freaks and Geeks faced off in the semi-finals where the Sidewinders 1 came out on top with the scores of 21-25, 25-23, and 19-17. The final was a battle between Sidewinders 1 and the Y-nots?, after an exciting three set match the Sidewinders 1 defeated the Y-nots? 22-25,25-21,16-14.
Instead of awarding 1st and 2nd place awards the NLVA decided to give out three all-star awards per team - top defensive player, top offensive player, and the most spirited player. The three players from each team were:

The tournament was such a great success that the NLVA is hoping to hold another invitational before the provincial champions March 23-24, 2001.
