The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school girls volleyball championships

Four provincial girls volleyball champions will be crowned this coming weekend. Twenty-nine teams from around the province will be competing for the four titles.

The 4A girls competition will take place in Grand Falls-Windsor, hosted by Exploits Valley High. The tournament is being run in a two division format with the top two teams from each division advancing to the medal round. Division 1 will consist of the host school along with Stephenville High, Bishops College (St. John�s) and Pearce High (Burin). Division 2 will see action between Regina High (Corner Brook), Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and Discovery High (Bonavista). Matches get underway at 1 p.m. Friday at both Greenwood and Maple venues. The championship match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Maple.

The 3A Provincial Girls Volleyball Championships are being co-hosted by Lumsden School and Lester Pearson High in Wesleyville. Nine teams will be competing for the coveted banner in a two division format. Games will be played at Lumsden School and Gill Memorial in Musgrave Harbour. Division A will consist of Botwood Collegiate, Musgravetown Central High, the co-host Lumsden, Pasadena Academy and St. James Regional High (Port aux Basques). Teams competing in Division B include Menihek High (Labrador City), St. Michael�s High (Bell Island), Marystown Central High and Lester Pearson Memorial. Matches get underway at 11 a.m. Friday at Lumsden and 12:30 p.m. at Musgrave Harbour, with round robin games continuing through Saturday morning. The championship match is set for Saturday afternoon in Lumsden.

Glovertown Regional High is the host school for the eight team Girls 2A Volleyball tournament. The tournament will be run in a two division format. Playing in Division 1 will be the host Glovertown Regional High, Grandy�s River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), St. Joseph�s High (Lamaline) and Northshore Collegiate (Northern Bay). Competing for top honors in Division 2 will be Smallwood Academy (Gambo), King Academy (Harbour Breton), Hollands Memorial (Norris Point) and St. Michael�s (Arnolds Cove). All matches will be played at Glovertown Academy with the first match getting underway at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Round robin games continue throughout Friday and again starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Eric G. Lambert School in Churchill Falls is the host for the A Girls Provincial Tournament. An island tournament was held two weeks ago among those regions on the island contesting the tournament. The winner of that event qualified for the provincial in Labrador. St. Marks School from Kings Cove was the island winner. When a provincial tournament is held in Labrador, the Northern region combines the regional and provincial competition. Joining St. Marks at the provincial tournament will be the host, Eric G. Lambert, J.C. Erhardt from Makkovik and Lake Melville School. Matches start 6:00 p.m. on Friday and continue throughout Saturday. Playoffs begin at 2 p.m. followed by the championship match.

Keyin College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association are the sponsors for all the provincial tournaments.
