The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Angela King, president of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SNL), announced the implementation of a series of regional seminars to be hosted throughout the province. The purpose of the seminars is to inform the general public about the ongoing programs offered by SNL.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador operates the provincial athlete, team, coach, and executive of the year as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame, the Provincial Sports Volunteer of the Year and an annual scholarship/bursary program.

Ms. King commented on the seminars: "Last spring we identified several breakdowns in communications somewhere within our system of distributing information on our programs throughout our provincial sport system. It was an eye-opener to hear as many people say that they were unaware that we operated this program or that program.

"Within the next month or so we have our regional directors running these seminars in their own community. They will conduct each seminar for an hour or two with the general public invited along to participate in general discussions as well as general question and answer time. We will work to improve the content after our initial group of seminars, depending upon the interest in each particular area of discussion.

"In May or June, we will run another round of seminars, again with our regional directors going to a neighboring community with the same information. As an example, Bill Burke will run one in Grand Falls-Windsor in December, but his next one may be in Gander or Springdale. Over a period of a few years we hope to be able to offer these information seminars to the majority of the population in the province."
