The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school boys and girls slo-pitch championships

The High School Athletic Federation kicks off its fall season this coming weekend. Four provincial high school slo-pitch softball championships will take place at various venues across the province. Qualifying tournaments have been held over the past two weeks with regional winning teams advancing to the provincial championships.

The 3A boys championship is being hosted by St. Michael�s All Grade in Arnold�s Cove. Ten teams will compete in two divisions for the championship banner. The first division will play out of the Come by Chance field and will consist of the following teams: Dunne Memorial (St. Mary�s), Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls), E.J. Pratt (Brownsdale) and Random Island Academy. Playing in the second division at Arnold�s Cove field will be Sacred Heart Academy (Conche), St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), E.A. Butler (McKays) and the host school, St. Michael�s All Grade.

The opening ceremonies will take place Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with games getting under way at 9:00 a.m., Friday at both fields. The semi-finals are set for 1:30 and 2:45 Saturday with the championship scheduled for 4:15.

Dunne Memorial Academy in St. Mary�s will play host for the eight team girls 3A tournament. Games will be played at St. Mary�s and Gaskiers Fields. The red division will see action from St. Joseph�s (Lamaline), Holy Trinity High (Heart�s Content), E.A. Butler High (McKays) and the host school. In the blue division, J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Sacred Heart High (Conche), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie) and St. Mark�s High (King�s Cove) will battle for playoff berths.

Games get under way at 9:00 a.m. on Friday at both venues and continue throughout the day. The top two teams from each division will play 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Saturday with the winner of those games advancing to the 1:30 p.m. championship game.

Carbonear Collegiate is the host school for the boys 4A tournament. There will be 10 teams battling for the provincial banner in this event. Division A will consist of Fogo Island Central High, Stephenville High, Queen Elizabeth Regional high (Foxtrap), Laval High (Placentia) and Carbonear Collegiate. Competing in Division B will be St. John Bosco (St. John�s), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Roncalli High (Avondale), Indian River High (Springdale) and Pearce High (Burin Bay Arm).

The first games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Friday with round robin games continuing Saturday morning. The cross-over games will be played at 3:00 p.m. with the championship game set to go at 4:30 p.m..

The girls 4A tournament is being hosted by Stephenville High. Games begin at Stephenville High field and Diamond A at 9 a.m. Friday. Division A consists of Roncalli High (Avondale), Fogo Island Central High, Mobile High and Stephenville High School. Division B consists of the following schools: Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Pearce Regional High (Burin Bay Arm), Clarenville High and Indian River High of Springdale. All teams will advance to the playoff round on Saturday with first in one division playing fourth in the other, second in one division playing against third in the other division. Semi final games are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. followed by the championship game at 3:00 p.m.

Keyin College and School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers Association are the sponsors for all four of the provincial tournaments.
