Canada Games indoor volleyball teams results Duffett selected to National Youth Team

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Associationss Canada Games teams recently competed in the National Team Challenge Cup Tournament in Kingston, Ontario, which is the seeding event for next years Canada Games scheduled for London, Ontario. The girls completed the event with an overall seventh place finish and the men ended the tournament being seeded eight.

During the round robin, the girls, had a record of one and three, losing to British Columbia (9-25, 13-25, 12-25), Quebec (8-25, 18-25, 22-25), Manitoba (12-25, 17-25, 18-25) and defeating Nova Scotia (16-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 15-10). This record placed them in fourthh place in their pool, placing them against Belgium in their first playoff match, where they were defeated in three straight sets. Belgium was entered in the tournament as an exhibition team and, therefore, could not advance in the playoffs as a result Newfoundland had to face Nova Scotia, who defeated New Brunswick in their playoff match. The match vs Nova Scotia was for seventh and eight place seeding leading into the Canada Games with Newfoundland coming out on top 3-0. (25-22, 25-22, 25-23).

The mens team opened the NTCC vs Quebec with an exciting 3-1 win (25-21, 15-25, 28-26, 25-23) then losing the next three matches of the tournament, vs Ontario (20-25, 16-25, 14-25) vs British Columbia (15-25, 14-25, 13-25) and Nova Scotia (16-25, 18-25, 21-25). This 1-3 record placed the team fifth in their pool, thus, setting them up to face New Brunswick in their first playoff match defeating them 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 25-10). This win earned the team the right to face Quebec in a re-match for seventh and eight seeds for the Canada Games with Quebec winning 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-14, 15-13).

During the event, Doug Duffett from the Newfoundland Canada Games team was one of 16 players from the tournament selected to the Canadian National Youth Team. As a result of the selection, Duffett did not travel home to Newfoundland with the team. He will travel to Ottawa and train for a week in preparation for matches with the U.S. National Youth Team. Duffett was the only player from Eastern Canada selected to the team. This team is the first step towards selection of next years Junior National team that will compete in the World Junior Championship.
