Provincial High School Athletic Federation held annual
general meeting this past weekend

The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation held its annual general meeting this past weekend at the Battery Hotel in St. Johns. There were many issues on the table for discussion that could possibly change the way the federation operates its core program.

A resolution calling for a restructuring of the provincial tournament was passed to be in effect for the 2001-2002 school year. Although the specifics of the restructuring are yet to be worked out, the delegation felt that it was a very positive step in making the federations tournaments more of a showcase event.

The issue of fair play was another issue that was discussed in great length, as it has been in past years at the AGM. It was felt in the past that the sport governing bodies fair play rules did not take into consideration many of the differences in the high school sports system. However, this past weekend a resolution was passed that would have the federation develop its own fair play policies. This was seen as a very positive step for the federation.

The federation also set its athletic calendar for the 2000-2001 school year. Provincial tournaments were awarded to schools based on the tournament rotation and changes were made to the federations Handbook and Technical Standards.

The Labrador Travel Subsidy was a very hot topic for discussion. With the increased users in high school sports system in Labrador and increased air fares, the subsidy provided has to be stretched even further than ever before. The situation has come to the point where northern athletes will not be able to participate in High School Athletic Federation programs. The northern delegation has decided that, effective immediately, there would no longer be high school sports offered in Labrador schools, continuing throughout the 2000-2001 school year.

There was a re-affirmation of the value of and need for high school sports programs in our schools. The 2000-2001 school year promises to be a very exciting one for high school sports and the High School Athletic Federation.
