High School Athletic Federation announces winners

The Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation will be honouring the top student-athletes, coaches, administrators and schools this coming Friday evening at the Battery Hotel in St. John�s. Awards to be presented include Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year, Coach of the Year, Coaching Service Award, Honour Award, Recognition Awards and for the first time School of the Year Awards.

The Student Athlete of the Year Award recognizes graduating students who combine exceptional athletic and academic ability and success. The winner of the 2000 Male Student Athlete of the Year is David Winsor from Carmanville School Complex. Although Winsor has participated at the provincial level in basketball and regionally in softball and badminton his greatest success has come on the volleyball court. He was a member of the Carmanville team that won the 4A championship in 1999-2000 as well as gold and silver medals in 1997-98 and 1998-99 in 3A Championships. His Loopers Volleyball Club will be participating in the National Juvenile Championships this month in Winnipeg. Winsor has numerous sportsmanship, MVP and All Star Awards to his credit. He is also very involved in the Air Cadet Program and has won awards for success at the Atlantic level as well as provincial, regional and national participation in chess.

The runners up for Male Student Athlete of the Year are Tim Nash from Fatima Academy, St. Bride�s and Travis Halliday from Riverwood Academy, Wing�s Point.

The Female Student Athlete of the Year Award for 2000 goes to Amy Dalton from Roncalli in Avondale. No stranger in basketball circles, Amy led her team to the 4A provincial championship in April. She has played national level basketball, capturing a bronze medal, participated in the Nike All Canada Camp twice, has won numerous all star and MVP awards including being selected to the All Canada Team at the Under 17 Nationals in Vancouver. Dalton has been recruited by eight universities to play basketball, including Memorial University. In addition to her abilities on the basketball court, Dalton is also a top notch softball, volleyball, cross country running and karate athlete.

The runners up for Female Student Athlete of the Year are Dana Farrell from St. Lawrence Central High and Sara Murphy from Stephenville High. The winners and each of the runners up for Student Athlete of the Year will receive scholarship money sponsored by Newfoundland Power and Source for Sports.

Dennis Lush of Carmanville School is the Coach of the Year for 2000. He coached his 2A school to the 4A Provincial Volleyball Championships won the NLVA U19 men�s provincials, juvenile boys volleyball championships as well as four first place and one second place finish in invitational volleyball tournaments. His team will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the national juvenile volleyball championships in Winnipeg later this month. In addition to coaching volleyball, Lush also coached Carmanville boys basketball to a first place in 2A regional basketball and a top four finish provincially.

The runners-up for Coach of the Year are Fred Simms from Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts and Ron Blair from J.C. Erhardt Memorial in Makkovik.

The Coaching Service Award is presented to an individual in recognition of many years coaching high school sports and developing programs and student-athletes at the high school level. The Coaching Service Award for 2000 goes to Graham Oliver from St. Michael�s Elementary in Stephenville. He has been instrumental in the development of cross country skiing in western Newfoundland, over the past 22 years. He has held numerous executive positions with the Stephenville Ski Club, Newfoundland Cross Country Ski Association and Biathlon Canada. He has also been involved in coaching cross country skiing, cross country running, volleyball and basketball. In cross county skiing, Oliver has coached both boys and girls, junior and senior cross county skiing at St. Stephen�s High over the past seven years and has won provincial banners annually. In addition to this, Oliver has been heavily involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program.

The runner up for the Coaching Service Award is Barry Hall from Lumsden.

The Honour Award recipient for 2000 is Tony Reardon from St. Catherines Academy in Mount Carmel. Reardon has been involved with high school sports since 1972, at Enright Memorial and St. Catherine�s High. He has won a number of provincial basketball championships throughout his years of coaching. He has established minor basketball programs in his area, producing many elite players. Reardon has also been involved coaching cross country running, table tennis and rifle shooting.

The runner up for the Honour Award is Terry Dawe from Jane Collins Academy in Dover.
