The following is being released at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Sea-Hawk shooters high at Provincial Air Rifle Championship

March 25 was a good day for the MUN Sea-Hawks rifle club, as they competed in the provincial championship air rifle competition. As usual, the university was well represented by a combination of both team and club members. Competitive air rifle is an Olympic sport that has been shot in Newfoundland for more than two decades. While turn-out was lower than last year, the competition in the higher classes was among the best ever seen.

Shooting in the master class, Dave Woolridge set a new provincial record by shooting a 570, as well, this score guaranteed the Sea-Hawk shooter the gold. Sea-Hawk shooters also dominated the expert class with shooters from the team taking the top four positions. Corey Ivany took the gold with a score of 542, followed by Jason Pelley with a 533. Third place went to Shawn Dyke, who defeated Jeff Barbour by one point with a 524 to earn him a bronze.

In the sharpshooter class it was Don Taylor breaking in his new shooting coat with a 526 to win the gold. The score was just enough to re-class Don as an expert. Second place was won by Brian Fitzgerald with a 512. Finally, the bronze was taken by St. Catherines Chris Linehan with a 479.

In the marksman division, Steve Greeley shot a 515 to take first place. Second place was won by St. Catherines Darren Dobbin with a score of 469, third place went to Memorials Randal Power with a 448.

The novice class of tyro was won by Zach Bath with a 392.

The next invitational air rifle and pistol match will be held May 13. This event will be sponsored by the Caribou Gun Club of Mount Pearl.
