The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school girls basketball championships

The High School Athletic Federation will sponsor four high school girls basketball championships this weekend. Thirty teams will compete for top honors in the events.

St. Mark�s Central High in Kings Cove will host the A tournament featuring seven teams in a two divisional set up. Division A will consist of St. Joseph�s Central High (Bay de Verde), Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn) and St. Peter�s (Westport). Division B consists of Lakewood Academy (Grenwood), St. Marks and D.C. Young form Port Hope Simpson. Games start at 1:30 p.m. Thursday and continue throughout Friday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, Saturday. The championship game is set for 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

St. Lawrence Central High will be hosting eight teams in the Girls 2A Basketball. Games will be played at both St. Lawrence Central High and Laurentian Place. Games start at 3:00 p.m. Thursday and continue throughout Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The top teams from the blue and white division advance to the playoffs Saturday morning. The blue division consists of St. Lawrence, St. Michael�s (Arnold Cove), Goose High School and St. John Bosco (St. John�s). The white division consists of Dunne Academy (St. Mary�s), Balancer Memorial (Doles), J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and St. Augustines High (Plum Point).

Fogo Island Central High will host six schools vying for the 3A title. The tournament will be run in a two divisional round robin format. Division A will feature Mobile High School, Baie Verte High and the host, Fogo Island. Division B will see action from Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Menihek High (Labrador City) and Leo Burke Academy (Bishops Falls).

The first game will get underway at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Cross overs will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the championship game scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Roncalli High School in Avondale is the host school for the 4A Girls Championships. Nine teams will be competing for the championship banner. The red division will see action from the host along with St. Kevins (Goulds), Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista). The white division will feature Beaconsfield High (St. John�s), Stella Maris (Trepassey), Lewisporte Collegiate, Exploits Valley High (Grand-Falls-Windsor) and Stephenville High. All games will be played at Roncalli High School beginning 12 noon Thursday. The championship game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
