The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school boys basketball championships this weekend

Four provincial high school boys basketball championships will be decided this coming weekend. Forty teams from across the province will compete in four tournaments to decide the top A, 2A, 3A and 4A teams. Schools are classified into each of the classifications based on school size.

The A tournament is being hosted by Our Saviour King Academy in Southern Harbour. Eight teams will compete in a two division round robin format to determine the four teams advancing to the playoff round. Division A will play out of Our Saviour King and will feature the host, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Mountain Field Academy (Forteau) and Middle Arm School. Division B, playing out of St. Michael�s will see action from St. Joseph�s (Bay de Verde), St. Anne�s (Conne River), Holy Name of Mary (Lawn) and Random Island Integrated. Games get under way at both facilities at 1:00 p.m., Thursday. The championship game is set for 3 o�clock.

Grandy�s River Collegiate in Burnt Islands is the host school for the Boys 2A tournament. Twelve teams, set up in four divisions will be battling for the title. Division A and D will play round robin games at St. James High in Port aux Basques while Division B and C will play at Grandy�s River. Games get under way 3:00 p.m. Thursday. Quarter finals are slated for Friday at 4:00 and 5:45, semi-final Saturday at 9:00 and 10:45 and the championship game at 1:00 p.m. Division A consists of Belanger Memorial (Doyles), St. John Bosco (St. John�s) and St. Augustine�s (Plum Point). Division B will see action from St. Lawrence Central High, Goose High School and King Academy (Harbour Breton). Division C will feature Carmanville School Complex, Grandy�s River Collegiate and St. Joseph�s (St. Georges). Rounding out the court in Division D is Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Dunne Academy (St. Mary�s) and Cape John Collegiate (LaScie).

Laval High School in Placentia will be hosting 10 schools competing for the 3A title. Games will be played at both Laval and Argentia gyms. Division 1 will feature the host, Laval, Mobile Central High, Coaker Academy (Summerford) Piccadilly Central High and Pasadena Academy. Division 2 will see action between St. Catherines Academy (Salmonier), Musgravetown Central High, Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony) and Menihek High (Labrador City). Games get unde rway at 12 noon, Thursday at both facilities and continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals Saturday morning with the winners of those games playing in the 3 o�clock championship game.

Carbonear Collegiate is the host for the 4A Boys Championships. Ten teams will also be vying for this title playing in a two division round robin format. The Maroon division will consist of O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Elwood High (Deer Lake), Carbonear Collegiate, Pearce High (Burin) and Gander Collegiate. Competing in the Grey division will be Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), Regina High (Corner Brook), Stella Manis (Trespassey), Roncalli High (Avondale) and Exploits Valley High (Grand-Falls-Windsor). Games will be played at Carbonear and St. Francis High with two games scheduled for St. Columbia. The tournament gets under way 12 noon, Thursday and concludes with the championship game, Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
