The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Island 3a high school badminton championships this weekend

The island 3A high school badminton championships are being held this coming weekend in Gillams. Templeton Collegiate will be the host school for the five team event. In addition to Templeton, Glovertown Regional High, Holy Cross (St. Alban�s), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island), and St. Augustine�s Central High (St. Barbe) will also be vying for the right to qualify for the provincial.

The provincial 3A badminton championships are being held April 14 and 15 at Menihek High School in Labrador City. The team that wins the island tournament this coming weekend will advance to the provincial in Labrador City and will compete against Labrador schools.

The team component of the competition will take place on Friday and will be set up in a round robin format. Each encounter in the team competition will consist of one w girls singles, one boys singles, one girls doubles, one boys doubles and one mixed doubles.

The individual component of the competition will take place on Saturday. Individual titles will be decided in each of the five divisions. The championship banner and gold and silver medals will be awarded in the team competition, while individual gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in the individual competition.
