Provincial high school hockey championships this weekend
Two provincial high school hockey championships will be decided this coming weekend. Six teams have qualified for the 3A championships which will be hosted by Harriot Curtis Collegiate in St. Anthony. Teams will compete in a two division round robin format with the top teams from each division advancing to the cross overs. Division A consists of Fogo Island Central High, Baltimore High from Ferryland and St. Augustine�s High from Flower�s Cove. Division B will include the host school along with Botwood Collegiate and Indian River High in Springdale. The tournament gets underway at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Five round robin games are scheduled for Friday with the semi-finals Saturday morning and the championship game scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista will be the host school for the 4A championships which will feature nine teams competing for the coveted Boyle Trophy. One division will see action from St. Kevin�s (Goulds), Laval High (Placentia), Lewisporte Collegiate, Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista) and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor). The second division will see competition from Elwood High (Deer Lake), Stephenville High, Gonzaga High (St. John�s) and the defending champion, Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts).
The tournament gets underway Thursday at 9 a.m. with a full slate of games scheduled for Thursday and Friday. The round robin competition concludes Saturday morning. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday afternoon with the top two teams advancing to the Sunday morning championship game.
The winner of the 4A championship will be awarded the historic Boyle Trophy - the second oldest trophy in North America. The Boyle was first presented in 1904, and since 1985, it has been awarded to the winner of the 4A high school championship.
