The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation Federation:
Provincial high school cross country skiing championships this weekend
The provincial high school cross country skiing championships are set to go this coming weekend in Plum Point. The lack of snow in many parts of the province over the past few years has played havoc with cross country skiing programs. This year over 60 skiers have qualified through regional competitions and will compete in provincial races.
Four divisional contests will be held, with provincial banners awarded for junior male, junior female, senior male and senior female. The team winners will be determined by totaling the points scored by the first three finishers of each team. (One for first, two for second, etc.). The team with the lowest score will be declared the winner.
The individual race will be run in freestyle format with varying distances for each division. Junior girls will race 2.5 km, senior girls and junior boys will race five km and senior boys will race 7.5 km. The relay race will be in the classic style and will consist of a .5 km course for junior girls and one km course for all other divisions.
The following schools will compete: G.C. Rowe Junior High, Presentation Junior High (both from Corner Brook), Assumption High (Stephenville Crossing), Stephenville High, Canon Richards High (Flower�s Cove), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), St. Augustines High (Plum Point), Bayview Collegiate (St. Lunaire) and Smallwood Academy (Gambo).
