Registration for winter camping and camping unit storage

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that registration has begun for winter camping and camping unit storage at Butter Pot and Notre Dame Provincial Parks.

"Those wishing to camp or store their equipment in a provincial park during the winter season should note that some security will be provided," said Furey. "However, government accepts no responsibility for any damage. In addition, stored equipment cannot be used for camping purposes since all provincial parks are closed until next spring."

Campsites will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis for a fee of $175, while camping

equipment may be stored for a fee of $100. Upon payment of the applicable fee camping equipment may be placed on a designated campsite or in storage from September 2000 to April 2001. All camping equipment must be removed from each park prior to its opening date for the 2001 season. The date by which it must be removed will be at the discretion of the individual managers.

Campers will be provided with access to firewood and pit privies, however they must provide their own water and remove any garbage from the park. As the gates to these parks will be closed and locked, equipment on campsites and in storage is to be accessed by hiking, skiing or snowshoeing. Motorized off road vehicles, including snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles, are not permitted in provincial parks. Park roads will not be cleared of snow, however, a cleared area will be provided to allow individuals wishing to access their equipment to park their vehicles off the highway.

Those wishing to register for winter camping and camping unit storage may do so by contacting the parks and natural areas manager of the respective parks to make arrangements. The contact person for Butter Pot Provincial Park is Keith Brown and he can be reached by calling (709) 685-1853, and Eric Fudge is the contact person for Notre Dame Provincial Park and can be reached at (709) 535-2379.
