Summer exhibition opens at the Provincial Archives

The Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL) today officially opened its year 2000 summer exhibition, entitled When Summer Spreads Her Hand: A Retrospective of Summer Sport in Newfoundland. This years exhibition is unique to the Provincial Archives as it consists of material from the rich collections of the Sports Archives of Newfoundland & Labrador and includes both archival material and artifacts.

The exhibition takes the visitor on a trip down memory lane of summers past in Newfoundland and Labrador, and is particularly timely as the first Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games of the millennium take place this summer in Mount Pearl. Materials in the exhibit include photographs, trophies, medals, ribbons and other sports memorabilia. These materials illustrate some of the historical highlights of the sports sector in the province including baseball, softball, soccer, field hockey, rugby, cricket and golf.

In addition, the exhibition pays special tribute to the Royal St. Johns Regatta, Newfoundlands involvement in the British Empire Games (1930), the 100th anniversary of the Guards Athletic Association and Newfoundlands participation in the Canada Summer Games since 1969. Another special feature of the exhibition is a 30-minute video, compiled from Provincial Archives film footage, which chronicles nearly 100 years of summer sports and recreation activities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The exhibit is located in the old House of Assembly Chamber at the Colonial Building, Military Road, St. Johns. Viewing hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday until October 2000.
