Major increases for sports and recreation federations

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks and Recreation Association will receive significant increases in funding for the 2000-2001 fiscal year.

"All three groups play a vital role in the development, promotion and delivery of recreation and sport in the province, and I am delighted that we have been able to identify additional resources to assist them," said Furey. "These substantial increases in funding will allow these groups to continue with existing programs and as well, assist them in several new initiatives that they are interested in exploring."

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador will receive a grant in the amount of $55,000, up from $30,000 in the last fiscal year; the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation will receive a $75,000 grant, up from $52,000 last year; and the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks and Recreation Association will receive $80,000, up from $63,000 last year.

"All three groups work in partnership with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation in the delivery of numerous programs and are instrumental in helping the department attain our goals and objectives, and I would like to thank them for their contribution to the sports community in the province," said Furey.

Each group is comprised of volunteers, with the exception of a few staff, and devote numerous hours of their personal time to the organization of sport and recreation programs for our province.
