Minister announces monitoring system for air access complaints

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today that his department has taken steps to monitor complaints received by the department regarding Air Canada and air access into the province.

"Officials within the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation have received a number of complaints regarding Air Canada and air access into Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Furey. "These complaints range from issues relating to lack of available flights, rates, scheduling and customer service. Whereas air access into the province is a vital component of the tourism industry, we felt is was important that we provide the public with a system whereby their concerns could be heard, monitored and forwarded onto Air Canada and other stakeholders."

The department has set up a complaints collection system which will involve collecting statistics and summary information on letters and calls of complaint concerning Air Canada. The department will send monthly reports to Air Canada summarizing all statistics and issues, including copies of all letters of complaint.

The department has also set up a dedicated toll-free line and e-mail service line, which will provide individuals with a 24-hour service in which to voice their concerns, complaints and views. Comments made through these mediums will not be addressed by the department, but will be forwarded to Air Canada/Air Nova for their information.

"I feel very strongly that the people of the province deserve a voice in this issue, as it affects each and every Newfoundlander and Labradorian," added Minister Furey. "We are committed to monitoring this situation, and to keeping the pressure on Air Canada until we see changes which result in improved service for the people of this province."

People can voice their concerns and views by calling toll free 1-888-404-4464, or by e-mailing comments@mail.gov.nf.ca.
