2000 Arts and Letters Competition winners announced Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to announce the winning entries in the 48th annual Arts and Letters Competition. The awards presentation was held at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John�s on May 4, 2000. "This year there were almost 1,000 entries submitted for consideration. This is a clear reflection on the popularity of the competition, the result of which is a wealth of interesting and fascinating entries by hundreds of talented Newfoundlanders and Labradorians of all ages," said Furey. "Every year as we receive the entries, we continue to see the incredible depth of artistic talent that we have in the province." There are junior (ages 12 to 18) and senior (ages 19 and over) divisions in the competition. The junior division has three categories including poetry, prose and visual art. The first place prize in each category is $300, the second place prize is $200 and the third place prize is $100. In the Senior Division there are nine categories including; Poetry; Short Fiction; Non-fictional Prose; Dramatic Script; Musical Composition; Painting; Three Dimensional Art; Drawing and Graphic Art; and Photography. The first prize in each category is $600, the second prize is $300 and the third prize is $150. A complete list of the winners follows. Mr. Furey said: "In conjunction with the Writers� Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador we are very pleased to announce a new category in this year�s competition named the Percy Janes First Novel Award.. The aim of this award is to commemorate the life and work of one of our province�s most distinguished writers, who died February 1999 at the age of 76, and to support and encourage Newfoundland and Labrador writers who wish to make a serious commitment to the writing profession. The winner in this category receives a prize of $1,000. "Ms. Julia Pickard has chaired the Arts and Letters Committee for the past eight years and is now resigning her position. We thank Ms. Pickard for all the volunteer work she have given to this committee and welcome Mr. Kevin Major as the new chair for the Arts and Letters Committee. Mr. Major, born in Stephenville, is one of Newfoundland�s most successful and prolific authors, whose books attract the attention of all age groups in Newfoundland, mainland Canada and overseas. Among his many accomplishments he has received the Canada Council Award for Children�s Literature as well as the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year Award for Children for his first novel, Hold Fast. His most recent book, House of Wooden Santas, won the coveted Mr. Christi Award in 1999." Mr. Major currently resides in St. John�s with his wife and children. Funding for the Arts and Letters Competition is provided by the Culture and Heritage Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. An exhibition of the winning entries along with selected other entries, can be seen at the Provincial Art Gallery, St. John�s Arts and Culture Centre from Friday, May 5 to Sunday May 21, 2000. Minister Furey joins with the Arts and Letters Committee in encouraging people to submit entries for the 49th annual competition next year. The deadline for submissions for the 2001 Arts and Letters Competition is February 16, 2001.
