Minister announces $19,000 in capital grant funding for sport

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced the awarding of three sport grants totaling $19,000 under the department�s Capital Grant Program. Recipients of the grants are: Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador, Softball Newfoundland and Labrador and Airport Heights.

Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador will receive $12,000 to purchase an electronic timing device for use during the 2000 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games and an essential piece of equipment in the hosting of future Atlantic and national events.

Softball Newfoundland and Labrador will receive $2,000 to purchase a softball pitching machine to be used by the Canada Games male and female teams preparing for the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario.

Airport Heights will receive $5,000 for site preparation for the construction of two new scoreboards, essential for the hosting of the Snicker�s Cup National Soccer Tournament scheduled for October 2000 in St. John�s.

Minister Furey said: "Government recognizes the tremendous contribution sport makes to the province and the economic spin off created by hosting regional, national and international events. I am extremely pleased we have been able to assist these volunteer groups with the purchase of equipment for their respective sports as this equipment is essential for hosting currently planned and future events."
