Independent assessment to be completed on hiring procedures

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that government will be appointing a person to conduct an independent assessment of the hiring procedures of the Viking Trail Tourism Association (VTTA) as a result of concerns raised about recent hirings at the Norstead site.

"LAnse aux Meadows is the site of one of this provinces most important tourism attractions. This year, we are commemorating the 1,000 anniversary of the Viking arrival in North America at LAnse aux Meadows through a project called Vikings! 1000 Years: Make the Journey. The VTTA is a key partner with government in the planning of these celebrations, " said Minister Furey. "Therefore we want to ensure that we, along with the citizens of the Northern Peninsula, are comfortable that clear and appropriate guidelines are in place and have been followed when hiring individuals as it pertains to one of this years biggest tourism developments.

Questions were raised about hiring procedures for labour positions to complete the construction of the Norstead site earlier this week by unsuccessful applicants. A total of 40 people have been hired to work on the site. Twenty positions were filled with individuals who were recalled to work on the site after being layed off last fall. The 20 new positions which were due to commence work on April 10 are the positions in question.

Furey added: "The assessment will determine whether the hiring procedures which included a call for applications, interviews which were intended to highlight an individuals skills, and an evaluation process which resulted in individuals ranked on the basis of a scoring regime was fair." The assessment will be completed prior to Thursday, April 20.
