Government increases sport and recreation grants by nearly 50 per cent

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced an increase of nearly 50 per cent in support of the sport and recreation sector in the coming fiscal year, bringing the total budget for the sector to $1.5 million. The additional funding was announced as a part of the 2000 Provincial Budget.

"Government recognizes the tremendous contribution sport and recreation make to the province, and the economic spin-off created from hosting regional, national and international events. More important, the industry plays a vital role in shaping our young people, as our youth develop physically, socially and mentally through participation in sport and recreational activities," said Furey. "We also recognize the significant contribution of the volunteer community, who aid in the delivery of programs and we hope that this increase in funding will demonstrate to these individuals that government is appreciative of their dedication and hard work."

Government recognizes that funding to support this important sector is imperative. The provincial sport and recreation organizations have indicated that additional funding was necessary for the maintenance and further development of sport and recreation programs. Government is pleased to be able to increase funding this year.

"This increased funding clearly indicates that government has been listening to the provincial sport organizations, and recognizes the significant financial requirements of a thriving sport and recreation sector," said Furey. "We have dedicated and talented athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador, and we are committed to supporting them in every way possible."
