History of Agriculture Exhibit at Newfoundland Museum In keeping with this years Heritage Day theme: "Our Farming Heritage," the Newfoundland Museum (Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Charles J. Furey, Minister), in cooperation with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Kevin Aylward, Minister, is displaying a special exhibit on Newfoundlands agricultural history. The exhibit "A History of Agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador, 1889-1989"(with additional panels updating it to1998) will be at the Newfoundland Museum on Duckworth Street for the next month. Dr. Jo Shawyer, curator, explores many different themes and topics through the exhibit including small-scale subsistence gardening in traditional fishing communities, the history of government involvement in agriculture, and the continued growth and diversification of Newfoundlands present-day farming industry. Dr. Shawyer originally developed the exhibit on behalf of the Agricultural History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador with funding from federal/provincial agrifood agreements. Heritage Day is meant to increase awareness of Canadas diverse heritage. The Heritage 2000 theme focuses on agricultural heritage, highlighting two specific themes: the heritage of agricultural buildings and sites; and the story of food production which has played such an important role in Canadas history. "A History of Agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador, 1889-1989" showcases Newfoundlands rich agricultural heritage and illustrates that farming has long been an essential part of Newfoundlands economic, social, geographic and cultural development. The exhibit runs at the Newfoundland Museum, 285 Duckworth Street, from February 19 to March 19. The museum is open to the public Tuesday to Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., Saturdays 9:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., and Sundays 12 noon - 4:45 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.
