Minister presents funding to Corner Brook triathlon committee

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced funding for the Corner Brook triathlon committee. Furey presented the cheque for $150,000 to Denise May, race director.

"The Corner Brook triathlon committee has done a tremendous job in promoting this region nationally and internationally, to the triathlon community. This will be the third year that Corner Brook will host the International Triathlon Union event. Each year this race of international significance proves to be a marvelous success, and is broadcast to millions of homes around the world," said Minister Furey. "Events such as this go a long way toward placing Newfoundland and Labrador on the world stage, not only as a sporting venue, but as a travel and tourism destination as well. The committee here in Corner Brook is to be commended for their hard work and subsequent success."

On July 23, Corner Brook will host the 2000 Canadian Triathlon Championships and on July 30, they will host the International Triathlon Union World Cup event, for the third consecutive year. In 1999, 150 elite athletes from 30 countries and 300 amateur athletes from Canada and the United States competed in the 1999 World Cup Event.

The sport of triathlon is growing in popularity and this summer the sport will make its Olympic debut in the 2000 Sydney Summer Games. The Corner Brook course is considered to be one of the toughest courses in the world today.
