Provincial Parks to offer cross country skiing

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that cross country skiing will be offered during winter 1999/2000 at Butter Pot and Notre Dame Provincial Parks.

Butter Pot Park will offer skiers 6.7 km of intermediate to advanced ski trails which follow the park's camping loops as well as an isolated trail that encircles Big Otter Pond. A warm up station, situated off the park's main road, is available for use by skiers. Meanwhile, Notre Dame Park has 7.5 km of competitive trails, varying in length and difficulty, accommodating both skate and traditional skiing, with which to challenge novice to advanced skiers. In addition, when the park is staffed and the facility is not rented, the park's ski chalet will be available for the comfort of park users.

In both parks, when snow and weather conditions permit, ski trails will be groomed and tracks set by parks staff. Parks users are advised that although park roads will not be cleared of snow, a cleared area will be provided so that vehicles can be parked off the highway.

"I encourage everyone to visit these parks and participate in one of winter's most popular and healthy activities and enjoy the clean air, fresh snow and beautiful scenery," said Mr. Furey. "I would also ask that users make every possible effort to protect the natural environment of these special places for the benefit of present and future generations, and leave nothing behind but tracks."

All persons intending to cross country ski in either park are advised that a fee of either $3 per person per day or $16 per person per season has been instituted. Children under 10 will be admitted free. Payment of the $16 fee permits the use of the cross country ski facilities in either park for the entire 1999/2000 winter season. The length of that season is dependent upon weather and trail conditions and is at the discretion of each site's Parks and Natural Areas Manager.
