Water and Sewer Component Northern Coastal Labrador Strategic Initiative

Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Joan Marie Aylward and Ernest McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador, announced today that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will provide $9 million over the next three years to expand water and sewer servicing in the five northern coastal Labrador communities of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Rigolet and Postville.

Minister Aylward said that this component of the Northern Coastal Labrador Strategic Initiative will address the water and sewer servicing needs of existing dwellings and will also provide these essential services for lands which are currently undeveloped. "It is very important that additional land be developed to allow these communities to grow. Virtually all of the land which is currently serviced has already been developed," said Minister Aylward.

By the end of 2002/03, all residents of the five communities should have full water and sewer servicing, including those living in new housing developments, at a total cost of $9 million or $3 million annually. This component of the initiative will be funded through the cost-shared federal/provincial Inuit Communities Agreement.

Minister McLean noted that these services are an integral part of the overall strategy to provide land for new housing construction and to improve the health and environmental conditions in all of these communities.
