Province to launch climate change educational initiative

Mines and Energy Minister Paul Dicks announced today government's plan to establish an information and coordination centre for climate change activities within the province.

Mr. Dicks said that this federal/provincial initiative would see the establishment of a pilot Public Education and Outreach (PEO) Hub in the province.

"This federal/provincial program will give Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a stronger awareness and understanding of the causes and implications of climate change and global warming," said Mr. Dicks. "Educating people on environmentally friendly activities will aid in our attempt to prevent the negative aspects associated with global warming and climate change."

Mr. Dicks said that the provincial government will fund one such project and that interested parties must be registered Canadian organizations that have experience in the fields of climate change, public education and outreach.

"Federal financial support will be equivalent to the financial support from the provincial government and its partners," said Mr. Dicks. "Maximum funding over the life of this pilot project could reach $80,000."

It is expected that a hub would be piloted for a minimum of 18 months between April 1, 2001 and March 31, 2003. Post pilot funding would be considered based upon success and available funds.

Interested applicants must meet eligibility criteria, understand the objectives of the hub, have an active plan to educate the public, have multi-stakeholder involvement, submit a budget outline, possess letters of support from financial partners and outline expected results.

Proposals should be submitted to the Policy and Strategic Planning Division of the Department of Mines and Energy.
