2000 Department of Mines and Energy open house

Mines and Energy Minister Paul Dicks announced today that the 24th annual departmental open house will be taking place on Thursday, November 2 at the Delta St. Johns.

This open house is a one-day event that will coincide with the 47th annual meeting of the Newfoundland Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.

The morning session will include overviews of activities and provide technical presentations on projects that are currently taking place within the Department of Mines and Energy. In the afternoon session, project poster displays and informal discussions with project leaders will be available to participants.

Another highlight will be the annual public lecture on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to be given by Douglas Boyce, geological survey paleontologist, entitled: Life The Real Survivor: A Four-Billion-Year Odyssey Through The Fossil Record.

Minister Dicks said that this open house will present an overview of the current field and research activities of the department, as well as updates in mining, petroleum and exploration in the province.

"This event will be informative and rewarding to all participants," said Mr. Dicks. "It is an opportunity to share information about various aspects of the department with the public and industry representatives."

It is expected that approximately 200 industry representatives will participate in this years open house.

The open house begins with an address by Minister Dicks at 9:00 a.m. in Salon B. Project displays will be maintained until 3:00 p.m., Friday, November 3, in Salon A.

Agenda follows.
