Appointments to the Human Rights Commission

Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons is pleased to announce the appointment of Joan Myles as chairperson, and Jan Wetmore and Carol McDonald as members, to the province�s Human Rights Commission. The appointments are for a five-year term.

The commission�s mandate is to enforce the Human Rights Code which prohibits discrimination and harassment and to promote equality and opportunity. The legislation applies to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and agencies and private businesses that are under provincial jurisdiction.

Joan Myles, an associate lawyer with the St. John�s firm Benson Myles, is also an adjudicator with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Public Complaints Commission. She has served as a legal director with the Law Society of Newfoundland, and has been a member of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the Newfoundland Medical Board and the Atlantic Provinces Arbitration and Mediation Institute.

Jan Wetmore is a former federal government parole officer, child protection worker, pre-school education teacher and director of the Wolfville Education Center in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Carol McDonald, who has been appointed to the commission for a second term, is retired from the business community. She is a former manager of the Airport Inn in St. John�s, as well as a former manager of the Avalon Raceway and manager/financial administrator of family-owned businesses such as the Big "R" Restaurant, McDonald�s Transport and Entertainment Enterprises.
