Kudos from Justice Minister for capture of Richard Ryan

Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons is commending the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) for their professionalism and promptness in apprehending convicted sex offender Richard Ryan today, at Long Harbour.

Mr. Ryan escaped lawful custody on August 3, while on escort from Her Majestys Penitentiary, to visit his sick mother in Mount Pearl.

"These past 25 days have been trying times for everyone, and I am very relieved that this man is now back in secure custody," said Minister Parsons. "I congratulate the RNC for their diligent efforts in going above and beyond the call of duty to investigate the escape. This speaks volumes for their professionalism and expertise."

The minister also commended the general public for any information they provided in assisting police with this case. "I also want to thank the media for their efforts in informing the public, on a daily basis, as to the status of this case, as well as other policing organizations across Canada, particularly the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who played an integral role in Mr. Ryans apprehension.

"The RCMPs Placentia Detachment were instrumental in following up a tip from an area resident, which led to them locating and securing the vehicle which Mr. Ryan is believed to have escaped in," added Minister Parsons.
