The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

The Human Rights Commission reports that a board of inquiry will commence on Tuesday, August 29, into a complaint filed with the commission against the Health Care Corporation of St. Johns.

Carol Evans of Portugal Cove filed a complaint with the commission in April 1999 alleging discrimination in employment on the basis of physical disability. In her complaint to the commission, Ms. Evans said she applied for a position as "a lead hand with the porters" which was to be given to the person with the most seniority. Ms. Evans said she had the most seniority of all the applicants but was not offered the position. She said the reason given to her for the refusal of the position was her record of sick leave over the past 30 years. The complaint was not resolved during the investigation and the commission ordered the appointment of a board of inquiry.

The hearing, which is open to the public, is scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. on August 29, in Meeting Room "A", Confederation Building, West Block. Gillian Butler is the adjudicator for the complaint. Barry Fleming will present the complaint on behalf of the commission.
