Environmental award garners praise from Justice Minister

Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons said the presentation of an environmental award to the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Centre, by the Department of Environment and Labour, is well deserved.

The award was presented to residents of the centres farm project for outstanding service in the protection and preservation of the provinces environment. It exemplifies the community-based nature of this project and the goodwill generated by staff and residents.

The farm project is a component of the centres vocational programs. It includes a fully-functional farm, greenhouse, selective cutting wood lot and sawmill, where youth gain meaningful experience in life and work skills. Youth have also been actively involved in the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture Project, cutting a trail on the provinces old railway bed, to enhance the habitat for ducks and migratory birds.

"The farm program at the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Centre has proven to be an important activity for residents who have earned the privilege to be engaged in a constructive project outside the confines of the institution," said Minister Parsons. "As this program continues to expand and diversify, it will offer even greater opportunities for residents to contribute to the community."
