The following is being distrbuted at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

Gladys Vivian, Executive Director of the Human Rights Commission, reports that a Board of Inquiry will commence on Thursday, July 6, 2000, into a complaint filed with the Commission against the Pentecostal Senior Citizens� Home in Clarke�s Beach.

Alice Murphy of Mackinsons filed a complaint against her employer in May 1998 alleging discrimination on the basis of sex. In her complaint to the Commission, Ms. Murphy states that she commenced employment with the Pentecostal Senior Citizens� Home in February 1995 as a Registered Nursing Assistant and worked in the "male sick room" until May 30, 1995. On that date, Ms. Murphy says her employer hired a male who was given preference in the "male sick room." On May 1, 1998, the Pentecostal Senior Citizens� Home discontinued the policy of requiring male Registered Nursing Assistants in the "male sick room."

Ms. Murphy�s complaint alleges the practice of showing preference to males between May 1995 and April 30, 1998 constituted discrimination on the basis of sex and resulted in her falling behind on the seniority list.

The adjudicator for the Board of Inquiry is Chief Adjudicator, Mary O�Brien, of St. John�s. Barry Fleming will present the complaint on behalf of the Human Rights Commission. The hearing which is open to the public is scheduled to commence at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Silverwood Inn in Bay Roberts.
