Vice-chairperson of the Public Utilities Board appointed Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons is pleased to announce the appointment of Darlene Whalen, P.Eng., as vice-chairperson of the Board of Commissioners of the Public Utilities. Ms. Whalen has been with the Board since May of 1997, as a part-time commissioner. She also served as an interim commissioner in 1992. Ms. Whalen is a graduate of Memorial University�s engineering program, and holds a Master�s degree in Environmental Engineering and Applied Science, also from Memorial. She has worked in the consulting field in the area of water resources engineering. Prior to joining the Board as vice-chairperson, Ms. Whalen worked with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Arts at Memorial, where she was a manager and co-ordinator with the Engineering Co-operative Education program. She has also taught environmental science and engineering. Ms. Whalen is a past-president of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and has served on a number of advisory groups to government, including the Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Engineering Task Force and the Newfoundland and Labrador Science and Technology Advisory Council. She is a founding member and past director of the provincial chapter of Women in Science and Engineering and the Discovery Network (now the Newfoundland Science Center). Ms. Whalen grew up in Corner Brook, graduating from Herdman Collegiate. She now resides in Conception Bay South with husband Bob and children Alexander and Amanda.
