Justice Minister attends opening of Police Week celebrations

Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons joined Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Deputy Chief Ches Oliver and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Assistant Commissioner Larry Warren for a cake cutting ceremony this morning, officially launching Police Week activities in the province. Police Week will run until May 20.

"People who have made the decision to go into police work, have a chance to make a significant contribution to society," said Parsons. "Police officers are on the front lines every day, and know the impact crime can have, on not just those who experience it directly, but on the entire community."

Officers from both the RNC and the RCMP, take an active role in the towns and cities in which they live, both on and off the job. Many of them are dedicated volunteers, coaches, athletes and community leaders. "Some of our officers have even gone beyond their communities, province and country, helping to bring peace and safety to citizens of countries such as war-torn Kosovo," said Parsons.

In his remarks, Minister Parsons commended both forces for their hard work, dedication and cooperation. He also challenged them to keep thinking every day about what more they can do, to not only advance their own potential, but to make an even greater contribution, always upholding what it means to be police officers.
