Government to undertake executive search for Chief of Police Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons announced today that an executive search will be undertaken to locate and assess all candidates interested in the position of Chief of Police for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). "This is an accepted method of filling the top jobs in modern police forces across Canada," said the minister. "The consultants will identify and do a preliminary assessment of candidates, and develop a short list for consideration by Cabinet." An appointment is expected to be made this fall. "There are many strong potential candidates within the force itself and there may be others in the police community in Canada interested in the position as well," explained the minister. "This will ensure that all interested potential candidates, not only from within the RNC and within the province, but from across Canada, will be identified and thoroughly assessed." The position of Chief of Police becomes vacant effective April 30, 2000, with the retirement of Chief Leonard P. Power. In the interim, the Senior Deputy Chief will fulfill the duties of Chief.
