Ontario court concludes Christian Brothers of Ireland assets available to satisfy claims

Kelvin Parsons, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, said he was pleased with the decision today by the Ontario Court of Appeal in which the court concluded that all assets of the Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada are available to satisfy the claims of abuse victims.

The court noted that the Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada admitted liability for the acts of abuse committed at Mount Cashel.

"The court also noted that two schools operated by the Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada in British Columbia constitute the most valuable assets potentially available to pay these claims, " Minister Parsons said. "The ownership of these schools is now before the B.C. court."

The Ontario appeal was brought by the liquidator and supported by representative counsel of abuse victims and Don Burrage, counsel for the Attorney General of Newfoundland and Labrador.
